The Relevance of Academic Research in the CRE Industry

Incoming IRES President, Steve Williams, Takes a Look at the Relevance of Real Estate Research to the CRE Industry

Property industry practitioners have traditionally turned to academic colleagues for fresh wisdom on a vast number of  questions concerning land, infrastructure and the built environment.

But is the research truly relevant?  Or are the research outcomes  impaired, as many practitioners claim, by a peer-review process that requires career focused researchers to overload their papers with formulaic statistical analyses?

As incoming (2023) President of the International Real Estate Society (IRES), I plan to raise awareness of the issue. Beyond just having a general moan, I want to find ways of strengthening collaborative links between academics and practitioners.

The debate kicks off with a panel discussion at the Pacific Rim Real Estate Society’s mid-January Conference in Sydney.
